Rich Peppiatt’s “Kneecap” and Luna Carmon’s “Howard” are among the titles on the longlist of new talent from British independent filmmakers for 2024, revealed on Friday. The selections highlight 31 British films across four premier filmmaking categories, including fiction and documentaries.
Peppiatt and Carmon join a group of new directors competing for the Douglas Hickox Award, including Amr El-Kady for “Laila,” Christopher Andrews for “Bring Them Down,” and Dena O. Pusic for “Tuesday.” Other contenders in this category include Lucy Cohen for “Edge of Summer,” James Krishna Floyd for “Unicorns,” Stuart Gatt’s “Catching Dust,” Karan Kandari’s “Sister Midnight,” and Jack King’s “The Ceremony.” And “Stopmotion” by Rob Morgan. “The Last Swim” by Sasha Nathwani, and “Sato – Year of the Rabbit” by Joshua Trigg. In the Best Debut Screenwriter category, sponsored by Film4, Andrews and Carmon compete alongside Floyd and Jade Hart for “Restless,” Kandhari, King, Peppiatt, Pusic and Sandhya Suri for “Santosh,” and the writing duo of Ms. and Mr. Thomas for “ Santosh”. “Evaluation”.
David Allen’s “Wilding” and Claire Tetley’s “The Contestant” are among the films recognized in the Best Debut Director – Feature Documentary category. The BIFA announcement follows the release of the 2024 Outstanding Performers Longlist, which highlights 12 British actors in outstanding roles. The organization will reveal the five finalists in all categories on 5 November, with winners announced at an awards ceremony on 8 December at the Roundhouse in London.
