Venezuela’s authoritarian President Nicolás Maduro claimed victory in July’s elections, despite overwhelming evidence defeat. In the chaos that followed, two dozen people were killed and 2,000 arrested. A quarter of Venezuela’s population has already fled the country’s economic devastation and political repression, and the elections have only made the situation worse.
