Venezuela’s authoritarian President Nicolás Maduro claimed victory in July’s elections, despite overwhelming evidence defeat. In the chaos that followed, two dozen people were killed and 2,000 arrested. A quarter of Venezuela’s population has already fled the country’s economic devastation and political repression, and the elections have only made the situation worse. Correspondent Martha Teichner looks at how the oil-rich country fell into crisis and speaks with hidden opposition leader María Corina Machado; and journalist William Neuman, author of “Things Are Never So Bad They Can’t Get Worse: Inside Venezuela’s Collapse.”
