Taskovski Films Sales has acquired Miguel Calderon’s “Loss Adjustment” ahead of its international premiere in Envision Competition at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam.
The film follows Pedro, a loss adjuster, who travels across Mexico investigating the causes of major disasters while dealing with corrupt “scavengers” who profit from human tragedy.
To escape the corruption and violence of his daily life, Pedro decides to immerse himself in a world that he believes is the opposite of his own: contemporary art.
He became obsessed with a photograph by artist Miguel Calderón, a portrait of an eagle, and purchased it, marking the beginning of his career as an art collector. This meeting sparked a close friendship between Pedro and Miguel, leading to the intersection of their worlds.
Pedro becomes involved in a theatrical production, but his lack of experience, the unsavory character he must portray, and the seductive contradictory attitude of the actress, throw him into an identity crisis. The play affects him more emotionally than the tragic events he faces daily at his work.
As the worlds of art and loss settlement collide, Pedro finds himself trapped in a paradox, unable to discern which of the two worlds is more deceptive.
“‘Reconciling a Loss’ explores the intersection between human tragedy and contemporary art, two seemingly distant worlds that, when examined closely, reveal a shared complexity,” Calderón said. “At the heart of the story is Pedro, a Mexican loss adjuster, whose work exposes him to corruption.” The brutality that follows in the wake of disaster and his function reflects the dark side of society, where exploitation thrives in the shadows of disaster.
“Loss Adjustment poses a larger question about the nature of identity: Can we truly escape the systems that bind us, or are we simply replacing one form of deception with another?”
The film is produced by Andrea Pasch for La Triada, Agostina Chiarino and Calderón for La Triada, and co-produced by Bocacha Films and Cactus Docs.
