“The Brutalist” cinematographer Lol Crowley will be honored with the Robbie Mueller Award at the 54th International Film Festival Rotterdam, which runs from January 30 to February 9.
The award recognizes “the art of an exceptional image-maker” and is awarded in collaboration with the Dutch Society of Cinematographers and Andrea Müller-Schirmer, wife of the late Dutch cinematographer Robbie Müller.
The award will be accompanied by a speech from Crowley during the festival, in addition to a screening of “The Brutalist,” which marks the film’s premiere in the Netherlands.
This year’s Robbie Muller Prize jury noted: “Lol Crawley’s camera is dedicated to the story and characters in a way that is at once unassuming and passionate. He forms an intimate and dynamic relationship with them. His sensual cinematography embraces the environment as fluid and unpredictable and aims to go with its flow rather than confine it to Predefined frame.
Crowley has more than 25 years of experience in film and television. His feature film credits include White Noise, Humans, Childhood of a Leader, 45 Years, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, and Ballast. His television credits include “Black Mirror,” “The OA,” “The Crimson Petal and the White,” and “Utopia.” His music promotional work includes Bob Dylan’s “Shadow Kingdom,” along with promotions for Arcade Fire, Nick Cave and Coldplay.
Crowley received nominations at the Film Independent Spirit Awards and ASC Awards in 2016 for Corbett’s The Childhood of a Commander; 2012 Camerimage Golden Frog Award nomination for “Hyde Park on Hudson” directed by Roger Michell; Nomination at the Independent Spirit Awards in 2012 for Braden King’s “Here”; and an Independent Spirit Award nomination and win for Cinematography at Sundance in 2008 for Lance Hammer’s “Ballast.”
