David Ayer has responded to public criticism over his support for James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman” film and its cinematic expansion of the DC Universe.
Just days before the “Superman” trailer was released, Ayer addressed the ongoing campaign among his fans to promote and release his cut of the 2016 “Suicide Squad” film. He asked fans to stop the initiative, writing on X, “I didn’t realize James was giving up About the Creature Commandos movie When I start the latest Ayer Cut campaign… The new Superman trailer will be released soon and I know there are intentions for another campaign for my version of the Skwad.
Iyer later added: “As a filmmaker, I want to support other filmmakers. I’m excited to see the trailer and I’ve heard through rumors that it’s incredible.” He went on to urge fans not to try to cloud the release of Gunn’s upcoming project, Man of Steel.
On December 18, Ayer took to X once again to express his reaction to the recent backlash regarding his support for Gunn and the revamped DC Studios.
“My Lord, if supporting another filmmaker is that controversial, I’m lost at this point.” “When I was a kid I had a nightmare childhood. My best friends were comic books. They embraced me and accompanied me when no one else would.
The director went on to share how Batman spoke to his soul while Superman’s optimism had a lasting impact on him. He stuck to his convictions regarding the situation, writing, “I can’t wait to see James’ trailer. Real talk. And I can’t wait to see his movie. And I’m pretty sure he crushed it. Because this simple Superman optimism is everything. And the little kid inside me needs that right now.”
Eyre then wondered whether he was wrong in his controversial view on the matter. He concluded that he would take a step back, although he did not specify whether this was related to social media or the entertainment industry as a whole.
Last year, Ayer discussed with Gunn the possibility of a “Suicide Squad” remake.
“All I know is that my unseen movie is playing much better than the studio version,” Ayer wrote in X in August of last year. “The interest in my story (offered) feels real and organic. And Gunn told me it was time to share it. It’s totally deserving of launching his own DC Universe without more drama about old projects. In a way I’m tied into this thing. I’m riding a tiger here and I’m handling this situation as best as I can.” “I can. Life is a very strange journey.”
Iyer also stressed that his version of the feature will be released eventually. In an interview with Total Film in December 2023, the director said, “It’s coming. Something is going to happen. Something is going to be revealed. The truth always comes out. It always comes out.”
