DC Studios president James Gunn defends delaying “The Batman 2” to 2027.
Matt Revees’ follow-up to “The Batman” has been delayed for 2022 from October 2, 2026, to October 1, 2027, it was announced on Friday, sparking some online backlash from fans wary of a five-year suspension. Gunn took to Threads later that day to allay any doubts surrounding the push, writing that it was “fairly common” for big-budget titles to have long gaps before a sequel is released.
“To be fair, a gap of 5 or more years is fairly common in sequels,” Gunn wrote on Threads. “7 years between “Alien” and “Aliens.” 14 years between the “Incredibles”. 7 years between the first two Terminators films. 13 years between “avatars”. 36 years among the “Top Guns”. And of course, there are 6 years between “Guardians Vol 2” and “Vol 3”.
Gunn had previously posted on Threads to confirm the delay of “The Batman 2”, writing that “the only reason the film was postponed” was because “the full script” had not yet been completed.
“Matt (Reeves) is committed to making the best movie possible, and no one can accurately guess how long it will take to write the script,” Gunn wrote. “Once the script is finished, there is about two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production for big films.”
Gunn, who took over DC in 2022 with British film producer Peter Safran, is preparing to release “Superman,” his directorial debut as co-executive director. Starring David Corensweet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult, the film follows the Man of Steel (Cornsweet) as he battles against Lex Luthor (Hoult) and grapples with his alien heritage. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11.
