Film Independent’s longtime president, Josh Welch, died on December 31 after a five-year battle with colon cancer. His age was not immediately available.
Welch began his career as an actor and began volunteering at the Film Independent Spirit Awards annually starting in 1996. He joined the Film Independent staff more than 20 years ago, becoming president in 2012. Prior to serving as President, Welch was responsible for planning and implementing Film Independent’s artist development programs for more than a decade.
He obtained a doctorate in philosophy from Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Kenyon College. He also served as lead singer for the band Meatyard, which will release an album later this year.
Several filmmakers commented on an Instagram post announcing his death. “He’s a tremendous human being,” Barry Jenkins said. “Only the best of the best among us.”

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Gavelle, and his daughter, Isla Welsh.
