Andrew Garfield recently told GQ UK that rumors claiming he’s signed on to star in Marvel’s Spider-Man 4 aren’t true, even though he’s blatantly aware that no comic book movie fan would believe him. After all, Garfield spent all of 2021 denying that he would return as the web-slinger in Spider-Man: No Way Home. He then appeared opposite Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire’s version of Spider-Man, which propelled No Way Home to $1.9 billion at the worldwide box office.
“I’m going to disappoint you. Yeah, no,” Garfield told the publication about the “Spider-Man 4” rumors. “But I know no one’s going to trust anything I say from now on.”
When asked if he would be interested in returning as Spider-Man or signing up to star in another big-budget Hollywood series, the Oscar nominee replied: “If it’s in my spirit and it’ll be fun. Maybe I’ll have five kids at some point, and I’ll need to start Saving for school fees or something like that.
Rumors have also circulated online that Garfield will reunite with “Silence” director Martin Scorsese to play Jesus in a new film, but the actor said “that’s not true to my knowledge.” Garfield would like the opportunity to make another Scorsese film, but “you can’t wait for Scorsese to call, because he makes a movie every three years, and a lot of times it’s with Leo DiCaprio.”
Garfield first appeared as Peter Parker in 2012’s “The Amazing Spider-Man,” but his tenure as the superhero came to an end when 2014’s “Amazing Spider-Man 2” underperformed at the box office. The actor told Esquire magazine last year that he was “left dangling” when his role as Spider-Man came to an abrupt end. Returning to “No Way Home” was a homecoming of sorts.
“I thought Toby wouldn’t want to do that. He’d act up every 10 years much to my chagrin, and I shared that with him,” Garfield admitted about his doubts about No Way Home. “When I heard he was kind of leaning, I thought… It will either be the greatest thing in the world or the worst thing in the world. I’m so grateful because it was the most joyful thing ever. “All the pressure was on Tom.”
“I would 100 percent come back[as Spider-Man]if it’s the right thing, if it adds to the culture, if there’s a cool concept or something that hasn’t been done before,” Garfield added to Esquire magazine at the time. Unique, exotic and exciting that you can sink your teeth into. I love that character, she brings happiness. If part of what I bring is joy, then I am happy in return.
As for “Spider-Man 4,” Holland said on the Rich Roll Podcast last month that the film’s screening was “excellent,” adding, “The writers are doing an amazing job. I read it three weeks ago and it really lit a fire in me. I sat down… Zendaya and I would read it together and sometimes we would jump around the living room like this was a real movie that deserved the respect of the audiences.
