Ricky Gervais won’t be hosting the 2025 Golden Globes, but he recently posted on X some jokes he would have made if he were attending the awards show. Gervais is perhaps the most famous and controversial host of the Globes, having presided over the annual ceremony five times. He last hosted the Globes in 2020.
“I sat in the bathroom wondering what I would say if I were hosting the Golden Globes on Sunday,” Gervais wrote on X. “It’s been a very good year for material.”
“Hello and welcome to the 82nd Golden Globe Awards,” his monologue had begun. “What a year it has been. Hundreds of performers jumped at the chance to go to the Vatican to meet the Pope. Many from Hollywood. They were clearly not happy about being part of the second largest pedo ring in the world…”
Gervais continued: “Justin Timberlake was convicted of (driving under the influence of alcohol). If he had gone to prison he would have heard the phrase “Sexy Back” a lot.
Gervais took aim at Diddy with the following joke: “Kevin Hart said that being at one of Diddy’s parties was uncomfortable because he wouldn’t leave him alone. Eventually he had to shout, ‘I’m a midget, not a baby.’”
This year’s Golden Globe Awards will be hosted by Nikki Glaser, who has been a breakout comedy star of 2024 thanks to the viral joke she made while roasting Tom Brady on Netflix. Glaser is the first woman to host the Globes alone. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler previously hosted the party together. Glaser spoke to diverse About her approach to the show.
“The way I feel about the globe is: What are we doing here? We’re treating this as if you’re all Nobel Prize nominees,” Glaser said. “I don’t think I can be as honest as I want to be, to express my feelings about some of these nominees who I don’t think they deserve it. This is the argument my writing team gets into: Will this fly? Can we make fun of “The Bear” or will “The Bear” take himself too seriously? It’s about knowing where the line is.”
The 2025 Golden Globes air on Sunday, January 5 at 8 pm ET on CBS.
