The Sindh government is moving forward with its electric vehicle (EV) taxi scheme, which has been in development for some time, with the announcement of introducing installment plans to purchase EV taxis for youth to reduce unemployment while promoting environmental sustainability, according to Express News.
Provincial Chief Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon directed the Transport Minister to finalize the financial models with banks and other institutions to ensure easy payment plans for the beneficiaries.
The program aims to help young people gradually own electric taxis while contributing to achieving the province’s clean transportation goals.
During a recent meeting with representatives of an electric vehicle assembler in Karachi, Memon reviewed the environmental benefits of the vehicles. He stressed that the program is in line with the government’s vision to reduce air pollution and promote green Sindh.
The electric taxi initiative, which includes standard and pink taxis, aims to address unemployment and promote environmentally friendly and affordable transportation options.
The project is expected to begin launching soon, with the first batch of taxis targeting job creation and cleaner urban mobility.
This development follows previous efforts to promote green transportation in Karachi, including the addition of 30 hybrid buses and 50 electric buses to the popular bus service in 2024.
While previous announcements indicated progress, this renewed focus underscores the government’s commitment to operationalizing the scheme.
