The New York City premiere of Cameron Diaz’s comeback film “Back in Action” was canceled Thursday night amid the Los Angeles fires.
“Due to the tragic fires, we are canceling the New York City premiere of Back in Action. We are aware that many in our industry and their loved ones are currently affected and our thoughts are with them at this time,” Netflix said in a statement Wednesday night. “This matter is appreciated and we appreciate your understanding.”
After an 11-year break from acting, Diaz returns to the big screen in the spy comedy with her “Annie” co-star Jamie Foxx. The film follows Diaz and Fox as a married couple of retired CIA agents, Emily and Matt, who find themselves out in the suburbs and back in the field when their cover is suddenly blown.
“Back in Action” will premiere on Netflix on January 17.
The cancellation of the premiere appears to be the first major event in New York City that will no longer be held due to the Los Angeles fires.
Several Los Angeles premieres have been cancelled, including red carpet screenings of “Unstoppable,” “Wolf Man” and “The Last Showgirl.” The AFI Awards Luncheon, BAFTA Tea Party, Critics’ Choice Awards and AARP Adult Film Awards have been postponed.
The deadline for voting on Oscar nominations on Wednesday was extended by two days due to the Southern California wildfires.
Voting for the academy’s nearly 10,000 members opened on January 8, and was originally scheduled to end on January 12. The deadline is now January 14. The nominations announcement, which was scheduled to be announced on January 17, has been moved to January 19. Conan O’Brien will host the 2025 Academy Awards, which will be held on March 2.
