Universal dominates BAFTA nominations with Brutalist, Wicked, Anora. trendy blogger

Universal is completely beating the studios and streamers when it comes to this year’s BAFTA nominations.

Thanks to “The Brutalist” (nine nominations), “Anora” and “Wicked” (seven each), as well as “Nosferatu” (five), “The Wild Robot” (three), and “Monkey Man” (one ), “Universal” and “Ape Man” (one). Its subsidiary brand, Focus Features, collected an impressive 32 nominations in total, double what its closest competitor, Netflix, achieved. The player finished 16th overall, led by Emilia Perez who finished 11th.

But Universal might have gotten five more if it hadn’t dumped Coralie Farget’s body horror “The Substance” before Cannes (Moby scooped up the film, helping the distributor get six nominations in addition to “Bird”).

Furthermore, distribution startup Black Bear UK had an exceptional year thanks to 11 nominations for “Conclave” (which, ironically, was released by Focus in the US), and three nominations for “Sing Sing”. Black Bear’s score of 12 was two ahead of Disney, which received 10, most of it coming from Searchlight’s “A Complete Unknown.”
