Islamabad: The Sindh government has announced an increase in the fares of the People’s Bus service, with an increase of 60% on various routes.
The new pricing structure, ranging from 20% to 60%, will come into effect from February 1. Notices have been posted on buses to ensure passengers are informed of the changes.
Senior Provincial Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon revealed that the government is providing subsidy of over Rs 50 per passenger, with over 100,000 passengers using the Red Line bus daily.
The government plans to reduce or eliminate subsidies, while redirecting the saved funds towards purchasing additional electric buses.
Memon explained that the increase in prices does not mean that the government is making a profit, but instead is reducing subsidies.
Earlier, Sharjeel Inam Memon announced plans to launch double-decker buses in Karachi’s Shahr Faisal this year, with the procurement process already underway.
He explained that the delay in the Red Line BRT project was due to utility relocations, not the actions of the provincial government.
Memon also expressed support for the establishment of new industrial zones and highlighted the Dabiji Economic Zone under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, despite IMF restrictions.
He revealed that the Malir Expressway would be opened soon and emphasized continued support for public transportation, including electric auto buses and women-only buses in Karachi.
