On Sunday, the President of the Federal Revenue Council (FBR) defended Rashid Mahmoud Langeal.
His statement came in response to the objections raised by the Senate Standing Committee for Finance and Revenue, as Senator Faisal Faouda criticized this step, describing it as “open corruption” and the misuse of government funds, especially after the continuous lack of taxes.
In the risk of the media during the 2025 International Day event in Karachi, Lanjerial reiterated the approval of the Council of Ministers to buy and confirmed that the concerns of the Council of Ministers were about conducting purchases, which will be reviewed and treated with respect.
“Young officers need appropriate transportation for field visits to collect sales tax,” Langrial edited, while maintaining that vehicles will be vital for effective tax collection.
FBR faced a shortage of 386 billion rupees in the first half of the fiscal year 25, with 5,623 billion rupees, compared to a goal of 6.009 billion rupees. Nevertheless, Langrian remained confident in meeting the annual goal.
On another front, Langrial announced that bids were received to restore direct tracking systems on vehicles and containers to enhance the transparency and security of the transport of goods. The previous tracking system has been stopped to eliminate monopoly, and a new system that contains sensors for both vehicles and containers is expected to be operated within two to three months.
Earlier, media reports highlighted concerns about increasing smuggling risk after the temporary shift to human monitoring of Afghan goods. Langrian explained that the partial manual system is illly done and that Karachi is still pivotal in collecting taxes due to the concentration of corporate head offices.
Regarding the housing sector, FBR Chairman revealed that Prime Minister Shaybaz Sharif has formed a work team to process high transactions taxes, with current reviews.
