Horror film “Dark Nuns” topped the South Korean box office during the weekend of January 24-26, debuting with an impressive performance, while action sequel “Hitman 2” also had an impressive start.
“Dark Nuns,” a horror film about two nuns who are pushed to perform an exorcism ritual, took first place on the list, grossing 5.71 billion Korean won ($3.9 million) over the weekend. With 588,498 views and 42.8% market share, the film grossed a cumulative total of $4 million, including previews.
The second part of the action comedy “Hitman 2” ranked second with $2.8 million in weekend revenue, capturing 30.3% of the market share and attracting 425,198 viewers. Its cumulative total, including midweek previews, is $3.9 million.
“Harbin,” the dramatic historical film about Korean independence fighters, fell to third place after weeks of topping the list, grossing $495,464. With 72,827 views over the weekend, the film’s cumulative gross now stands at $30.9 million.
The animated “Pokémon the Movie AG: Mew and the Wave Hero Lucario” debuted in fourth place with $285,445 from 45,984 admissions. Her cumulative total is $397,778.
In fifth place, the documentary “IU Concert: The Winning” grossed $542,261 from 28,063 admissions. “The Substance,” which had shown growth in previous weeks, fell to sixth place, earning $177,292. The film’s cumulative gross now stands at $2 million with 302,870 admissions.
In seventh place, the supernatural comedy film “Ghost Police” came in seventh place, earning $117,412. The animated film “Pororo the Movie: Great Adventure Under the Sea” fell to eighth place, earning $92,129.
“Crayon Shin-chan the Movie: Our Dinosaur Diary” and “The Firefighters” rounded out the top 10, earning $70,164 and $69,127 respectively, for a cumulative total of $5 million and $25.1 million.
According to Kobis, a tracking service run by the Korean Film Council, the top 10 films grossed about $8.6 million, reflecting a strong rebound from last week’s revenue of $5 million.
With new releases dominating the weekend and “Dark Nuns” hogging the spotlight, the Korean box office saw renewed energy as January comes to a close and the Lunar New Year holiday begins.
