The Standing Committee of the Senate concerned with water resources distorted by the Water and Energy Development Authority (WAPDA) has purchased 78 luxury vehicles of 740 million rupees despite the federal austerity policy prohibiting these purchases.
During the meeting, headed by Senator Awan certificates, the committee members expressed his lack of agreement on the financial decisions of Wapda, highlighting that the acquisition of high -end vehicles violates the cabinet directives regarding curbing government expenditures.
The criticism of the purchase of a Wapda vehicle follows a similar plan on the FBR plan to buy 1010 new Honda City cars at an estimated cost of about 6 billion rupees.
This purchase was suspended after a general violent reaction and reviewed the Senate Committee, with the issue referred to the PPR and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
The FBR president defended the need for vehicles, citing the requirements for enforcement, but the purchase was suspended amid allegations of mismanagement.
The Standing Committee for Water Resources also raised concerns about the slow progress in inquiries in financial violations within Wapda, with some cases dating back nearly four decades.
AWAN indicated that 187 PARAs related to WAPDA’s financial affairs is still unstable, including a 2009 billion rupees that have not yet been investigated by the Ministry of Water Resources.
The committee directed the completion of all suspended inquiries within six months, while emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability.
