On Friday, the Trump administration rejected more than 9,500 federal workers as part of a campaign to reduce bureaucracy, which affects employees in agencies that deal with land management, care for old warriors, and other public services.
Workers’ demobilization follows a former volunteer purchase program, which led to the departure of 75,000 federal employees, representing about 3 % of the civil workforce.
Discounts in the job affected the workers in the departments of the interior, energy, the affairs of old warriors, agriculture, health and humanitarian services. The discounts primarily targeted test staff in their first year, who have fewer employment protection.
The administration argues that the federal government is very large and ineffective, noting 36 trillion dollars of national debt and a budget deficit of $ 1.8 trillion as reasons for reform.
Democrats in Congress criticized this step, saying that it overcomes legislative power over federal spending, while Republicans, who control both two chambers, supported it to a large extent. The pace and scope of discounts led to tensions within the administration, as it was reported that the Chief of Staff of the White House, Suzy Wales, expresses their concerns about the lack of coordination in this process.
In addition to the workforce discounts, the administration has sought to weaken civil service protection, freeze external aid, and reduce operations significantly in agencies such as the American Agency for International Development and the Consumer Protection Office (CFPB). Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and National Health Institutes witnessed nearly half of the test staff.
The American Forest Authority has recorded 3400 recent developments, while the National Park service has left about 1,000 employees.
The internal revenue service prepares more layoffs, which may affect the collection of taxes with the approach of the deadline approach on April 15. The budget discounts also disrupted the efforts to prevent federal wildfires, which led to the suspension of seasonal firefighters employment programs and the removal of risk in the forests.
Treasury Secretary, Scott Payette, defended the cuts, describing it as part of a review to improve government efficiency. Critics, including federal employee unions, argue that the approach gives the priorities of industry interests on public service, with increasingly forming government jobs by private sector executives such as Elon Musk, who played a major role in restructuring.
Some job cuts faced legal challenges. The demobilization operations in the Ministry of Energy included 325 employees from the National Nuclear Security Administration, but some were later canceled to maintain nuclear security operations.
CFPB was temporarily stopped by order of the court, which delayed the expected collective termination. Federal workers’ unions have submitted lawsuits that challenge the acquisition program and efforts to reduce their size.
Meanwhile, a federal judge in New York extended the registration order that prevents the government efficiency management team (DOGE) from Musk from reaching the Treasury Department, following the privacy cases.
