South Korea announced on Monday its plan to obtain 10,000 high -performance graphics processing units (GPUS) by the end of this year as part of its efforts to remain competitive in the global artificial intelligence race.
ChargĂ© d’Affairs Choi Sang Mock stressed that the shift in the scene of artificial intelligence moves from companies’ competition to national competition in the ecosystems of innovation.
The government aims to secure these graphics processing units through cooperation between the public and private sectors to support the early launch of services at the National Intelligence Computing Center. This step comes at a time when global competition is intensifying the dominance of artificial intelligence, as the two countries are competing to reach advanced artificial artificial intelligence chips and technology.
Last month, the United States has provided new regulations that restrict the export of graphics processing units required for advanced artificial intelligence applications.
South Korea is one of 18 countries exempt from export restrictions, which target countries such as China, Iran and Russia. The South Korean government has not yet decided any GPU for purchase, but details about the budget and participating companies will be completed by September, according to the Ministry of Science, Information and Communications Technology.
NVIDIA, a leading American chip designer, has a 80 % dominant share of the GPU market, followed by INTEL and AMD competitors. Meanwhile, Microsoft -backed Openai, the famous ChatGPT creator, reduces its dependence on NVIDIA by developing its AI’s chips at home, with plans to start manufacturing in the conductor manufacturer in Taiwan in the coming months.
