All eyes are at the Cannes Trier Freimox Festival, where he decides the films that make the next festival. Meanwhile, in his other job as head of the Institute of Lumiere, he directs film lovers’ look at the origins of the middle.

In 2015, “Lumière! The Adventure begins”, which presented their work to a new generation. What is the reason for the new movie?
Since 1905, Lumière’s films have never returned to theaters. They turned their path, but I wanted to return to the cinema, which means that we had to do something contemporary, a real movie for an hour and a half, consisting of their 50 -second films. For this reason I say this with 100 Lumière films, we made Lumière.

I was surprised by the vision of Lumières, testing some techniques in 1895, such as repairing the camera at the front of the boat or train and photographing while moving, which he linked more with the “sunrise” from FW Murnau after 30 years.
You are not alone, since no one knows Lumière movies, except for the most famous songs or three songs. When I started as a volunteer at the Lumiere Institute, they showed me the first movie and said, “This movie was filmed there?” I was from Lyon, and I didn’t know.

For decades, people have really argued around whoever invented the cinema. What is the claim that you give to the turkey?
These discussions have always been there. But the cinema is a collective invention, and ends in Lyon on March 19. If someone tomorrow morning finds a vaccine for AIDS, it is not as if he invented the microscope. Louis Lumier used everything that happened before, including what Thomas Edison and William Dixon did. But once the device is invented, use it for use, and this is what I wanted to focus on in the movie.

Why do you only refer to Luis Lumiere? Isn’t the two brothers “fathers of the cinema”?
The patent of the cinema is located in both names, but Louis is responsible, and deals with the invention, the project, industry, etc. Auguste was interested in pioggia and medicine. I only made one movie for fun. He never talked about the cinema.

Let’s talk about how to choose the films contained in the project.
It is amazing: We have everything. Of the 1428 official films, there are 1417 films. I am watching Lumiere’s movies constantly, so I know them well. I wanted to give people a sense of a group – of topics, patterns, and graphic quality. In the final version, I even included a poor movie, a failed movie, just to show that it was not always great. In the team, there was a talented photographer, and there were those who had no talent.

Through this diversification, we see some of the first home films, trade travelers, mini -panels, and gap movies.
I am a man who shown a movie. This is my job, at the Cannes Festival and with Lumier’s films. I wanted to share the beauty of these films, and by presenting them according to the topic, to explain how, little by little, something of poetic and cinematic.

It is presented at the right speed, which travels the distance between us and these unknown people. It seems as if we were watching our neighbors, but also our ancestors.
There at the end of the nineteenth century, which was terrible, we have this moment of happiness and optimism. The cinema is as a sign of this development in modernity, but it is also a witness to this transition.

And why do you find that these films are still relevant today?
Lumière films were manually preserved, with no editing. Later, George Milis came and presented special effects. He was inventing liberation and doing very important things, but his approach was an extension of magic and theater. Louis Lumiere went out to the world and wrote with the camera. We have to learn to look again, and allow us lumière films to us. Because our eyes are contaminated. It is contaminated, and with Lumière, we can start again, like children.
