The Academy of Film Arts and Sciences sent a statement of its 11,000 members after criticizing its lack of public support for the Badie Bali, the co -director of the Palestinian documentary “No other land”, which was recently being held by the Israeli forces.
On Friday, the Academy issued a letter of follow -up to the name of Bali explicitly and apologizing for deleting it and the film from a statement sent earlier in the week.
“On Wednesday, we sent a message in response to reports of violence against Oscar -winning award -winning, the co -director of any other land, linked to his artistic expression. We regret that we failed to recognize directly to Mr. Bali and the film by name.” “We are sincerely apologized to Mr. Bali and all the artists who felt the lack of support from our previous statement and they want to make it clear that the academy condemns violence of this kind anywhere in the world. We are putting the suppression of freedom of expression in any circumstances.”
The CEO of Academy Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang signed the message, which showed the organization’s recognition of the size of the strike from the members.
The Council of Governors and senior leadership officials held an emergency meeting on Friday morning to discuss their response amid the reverse reaction.
The Academy issued a statement on Wednesday condemning the “hurting artists”, but it did not mention the name of individuals. By Thursday morning, a message began to revolve between members of Ampas, and criticized the failure of leadership to defend my mind publicly. As of Friday afternoon, 690 members of the Academy-including actor Mark Rovalo, director Ava Doferna and Oscar-winning director Alfonso Curon-recorded the message that condemns the academic silence after the balloon was detained by the Israeli authorities.
“We stand in condemning the brutal attack and the illegal detention of the Oscar -winning Palestinian director Hamdan Bali by settlers and Israeli forces in the West Bank,” says the letter. “Winning the Academy Award is not an easy task. Most of the films in the competition are moved through wide distribution and high -prices campaigns … because” there is no other land “to win the Academy Award without these advantages talks about the importance of the film on the voting membership. Targeting ballet is not just an attack on one of the director’s films – it is an attack on all those who raise witnesses and tell a reality.”
The letter sent support from international film organizations and prominent academy members in various branches. In addition to documentary filmmakers such as Alex Gibni, Aerol Morris, Laura Betteas, Liz Garbus and Roger Ross Williams, the signatories included actors Olivia Coleman, Joakin Phoenix, Rees Ahmed, Penelope Cruz, Emma Thompson, Natasha Leon, Javimer Bard, Sandra, R. Susan Sarandon.
Directors Ava Duvernay, Boots Riley, Todd Haynes, Adam Mckay, Jonathan Glazer and Jim Jarmusch have joined accountability.
Al -Balel was detained earlier this week after the witnesses as a violent attack by Israeli settlers near his home in the West Bank village in Soya. According to what was reported, then he was transferred from an ambulance by Israeli soldiers. Pallal said he was blindfolded and detained for 24 hours at the Israeli army base before his release on Tuesday.
Speaking to ABC News from a hospital bed, Ballal described fear of his life during the attack. He said: “They continue my attacker for 15-20 minutes. I have been bleeding from everywhere … I feel pain in every part of my body.” Bali denied accusations of throwing the stone and said that the soldiers mocked him, with a sign of his victory in the Academy Award during his detention.
Despite the statements of international film organizations, including the European Film Academy and the International Documentary Association, expressing its concern about Ballal treatment, the academy’s response was limited to a public message sent to the members.
Joal Abraham, the co -director “No Land”, called the Academy’s omission, “very disappointing”, saying X (previously on Twitter) that the internal efforts by the members, especially within the documentary, to push for a statement of naming that did not succeed.
Ibrahim wrote: “The academy had an opportunity to show courage and solidarity, and she chose silence.”
The Oscar -winning “Any Land” team was made by an Israeli -Palestinian team, including Ibrahim, Ballia, Bazel, Adra and Rashil falsehood, and narrated the battle of a Palestinian society in the West Bank facing displacement by the Israeli forces. The film was first shown at the Berlin Film Festival 2023, where it won the Documentary Jury Award and the Audience Award. Despite the extensive praise of the festival circuit, it was self -released in the United States after the distributors refused to receive it.
