Port Lewis: The Financial Crime Committee in the Indian Ocean nation in Ocean Ilanz said that the authorities in Mauritius arrested the former Finance Minister and the Central Bank ruler on Wednesday as part of the investigation of embezzlement in a government company.
Former Central Bank governor Harrvish Sieglo and former Finance Minister Renjanaden Badayai denied any violations and did not respond to the requests for suspension on Wednesday.
The government of Prime Minister Navin Ramgolam accused the previous administration in which the two former officials worked in falsifying economic growth, budget deficit and public debt numbers for years.
In one of his first movements after winning the elections in November, Ramgolam launched a public financial review.
The Financial Crime Committee said: “Renganaden Padaachy and … Harvesh Seeglam were arrested this afternoon after new evidence presented in the investigation of the alleged embezzlement of 300 million Mauritius Rurawi (6.70 million dollars).”
The mixed investigation relates to stealing alleged funds from Mauritius Investment Company, which has been created to help companies deal with the impact of the Covid-19.
