The Trump administration has given exceptions from the sharp mutual tariffs to smartphones, computers and a group of imported electronics to a large extent from China, providing great comfort to technology companies such as Apple and Dell.
According to a notice issued by American customs and US border protection, the list of tariffs excluded from import taxes has taken a retroactive impact from April 5. Exceptions cover 20 categories of products, including computers, laptops, disk engines, automatic data processing equipment, semiconductors, memory east and flat panel offers.
This step temporarily protects these products from 125 % mutual definitions imposed by President Donald Trump on Chinese imports. It also exempts them from the 10 % basic tariff applied to imports from most countries other than China, which reduces the costs of semiconductors from Taiwan and the iPhone produced in India.
In his interview with reporters, Trump said that more details will be provided soon and confirmed that the United States has gathered great revenues through definitions.
The administration’s decision comes amid concerns about the impact of the price -based price tariffs on American consumers. Total smartphone imports from China amounted to $ 41.7 billion in 2024, while Chinese laptops made from Chinese represented 33.1 billion dollars, according to US Statistical Office data.
Apple recently increased production in India to alleviate the effects of customs tariffs and rented shipping trips to transfer approximately 1.5 million iPhone to the United States.
While the mutual definitions of Chinese electronics were reduced, Trump’s duties 20 % before the Fintanel crisis are still standing. A White House official confirmed that Trump is planning to launch a new national security investigation into semiconductors, which may lead to additional commercial measures.
White House spokeswoman Caroline Levit said that Trump aims to reduce American dependence on China on critical technologies, with major companies such as Apple, NVIDIA and Taiwan Semiconductor accelerating the acceleration of efforts to the United States.
Meanwhile, Trump was late in raising tariffs to 57 commercial partners and the European Union last week, while maintaining a 10 % duty as negotiations continue.

However, financial markets showed signs of stress as China’s revenge by increasing the US tariff, adding uncertainty to the global trading environment.
