Mexican President Claudia Xinbum has announced a legal action against Google, accusing the technology giant of ignoring repeated diplomatic requests of not named the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” on the American map platform.
While Sheinbau did not reveal the location of the lawsuit, the conflict centers on Google’s decision to adopt the new name after an executive order signed by US President Donald Trump in January. The matter, which was released on Trump’s first day, claims that rename what is justified because, according to him, “the United States is doing most of the work there.”
Earlier this week, the Republican House of Representatives acknowledged a decision that supports changing the name for its use by federal agencies.
The Shinbaum administration argues that the decree applies only to the American part of the continental shelf and does not give Washington the authority to rename the entire Gulf, which is bordered by Mexico, Cuba and the United States.
“All we want is to respect the decree of the United States government,” Xinbom, criticizing what Outreach he called.
In January, Shinbaum sent an official letter to Google urging the company to contrary to its decision. A month later, the legal consequences threatened. At the time, Google defended this step in line with its policy to reflect the official government name when necessary.
Changing posters affects the US -based users, who now see the “Gulf of America”, while international users see both names listed in the list: “The Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)”. Users in Mexico continue to see the original name only.
The situation has also sparked political tension in the media circles. The Associated Press (AP) refused to adopt the new poster, which led to the possibility of reaching the events of the White House. In April, the American Federal Judge ordered the administration to lift the ban on AP.
Meanwhile, President Trump hinted that he might recommend the renames of the Persian Gulf during a coming visit to Saudi Arabia, and chose to refer to it in the name of “Arab Gulf”. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arashi rejected the idea as a provocative rumor, warning that such a change would lead to a great violent reaction from the Iranians.
