Islamabad: Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Minister Ahsan Iqbal on Thursday chaired a meeting to review the progress and challenges faced by two major national projects: the Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project (NJHPP) and the Diamer Basha Dam.
A press release said that the meeting was attended by Additional Chief Planning Officer Kamran Rehman Khan, Secretary Ministry of Water Resources, WAPDA Chairman, Member Infrastructure Waqas Anwar and other key stakeholders to discuss updates and next steps.
The 969 MW Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project, located near Muzaffarabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, is of great importance to Pakistan’s energy needs.
Since its inception in 2018, it has produced more than 20,030 million units of electricity.
However, recent structural problems in the project’s main racing tunnel (HRT) led to temporary power outages.
To resolve these issues, an international panel of experts, including a prominent Pakistani geologist, was appointed to identify the causes and suggest solutions.
Experts recommended steps to repair blockages and structural damage inside the tunnels.
