Cynthia Erivo held Space while accepting Out’s Out100 Icon Award on Wednesday night in Los Angeles. The “Wicked” star praised her and Ariana Grande’s “Waiting Space” interview with magazine reporter Tracy E. Gilchrist.
“According to the queer media, I’ve been all over your social media,” Erivo told the audience, adding: “I don’t want you to get too tired of me. There’s a sequel (‘Wicked’) on the way, and we really need to Make space for it and feel empowered in it.
Before she left the stage, as the song “Defying Gravity” from the “Wicked” soundtrack blared through the speakers, Erivo grabbed the microphone and sang along for a snippet. You can watch that here.
Erivo then reunited with Gilchrist to watch drag queen Patti Junia’s lip-sync performance of — what else? – “Defying gravity.”
Also at the event, Sheryl Lee Ralph gave an emotional speech when she received the Lawyer of the Year award.
“I’m a believer in the power of unity,” the “Abbott Elementary” star said. “The world may try to divide us, but our strength has always been in our ability to stand together, lift each other up, and remind each other that love – at its core – cannot be stopped.”
Other honorees seen at the party included Erivo’s longtime partner Lena Waithe, Shangela, Margaret Cho, Trixie Mattel, Olympian Tom Daley and his Oscar-winning husband Dustin Lance Black, and Zaya Wade with her father Dwyane Wade and stepmother Gabrielle Union, Chauffeur.
