The bill, which was approved during a session chaired by Parliament Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmed Khan, requires legislators’ salaries to be raised by up to 10 times. Defending the legislation, the Speaker described it as a constitutional right and consistent with the Parliamentary Act 1972.
Under the new bill, the salary of the district minister will increase from Rs 100,000 to Rs 960,000. The Speaker of Parliament’s remuneration will rise to Rs 950,000 from Rs 125,000, while the Deputy Speaker will receive Rs 800,000, up from Rs 120,000.
The salaries of parliamentary secretaries will jump to Rs 451,000 from Rs 83,000, while advisors and special assistants to the Prime Minister will see their salaries rise to Rs 665,000 from Rs 100,000.
Opposition leader Ahmed Khan Bashar raised objections to the draft law. However, the Speaker of the House of Representatives rejected these proposals, describing the legislation as necessary and within the mandate of the House.
