EU digital chief promises strong enforcement of social media laws – Trendy Blogger

The European Commission reaffirmed on Wednesday that it is fully implementing the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and the Digital Services Act (DSA) without delay, dismissing reports of delaying investigations into major US technology companies such as Apple, Meta and Google.

Hina Virkkonen, Vice-President of the Commission, said that the ongoing investigations are still at a technical stage, and include exchanges with companies before decisions are made.

The DMA addresses antitrust obligations, while the DSA focuses on content moderation, with the aim of creating a fair and secure online environment for all services operating within the EU. “We fully implement the DMA and DSA,” Virkkonen emphasized, adding that the rules apply to both European and non-European companies.

In response to recent statements by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg that European laws are “institutionalizing censorship,” Virkkonen responded that freedom of expression law protects freedom of expression rather than restricting it. Zuckerberg also urged US President-elect Donald Trump, who begins his second term on Monday, to intervene against EU sanctions on US technology companies.

The Commission’s comments come as it works to step up enforcement of its powerful regulatory tools, signaling its commitment to holding big tech companies accountable under EU law.
