An unexpected controversy has raised the Oscar race in the award season specified by historical monuments. Carla Sofia Jaskoun, publicly, is publicly facing her nomination for the best actress, an intense scrutiny after tweets that have been exposed to years of Islamist and racist discourse appeared.

Independent culture writer Sarah Haji, a journalist and hosting in Canada in the “Scamfluences”, revealed tweets and found herself in the middle of the conversation. While visiting the family in Southeast Asia, the instinct of her journalist followed, as she looked for Gascon’s political tendencies after she noticed what she described as a “dog whistle” in a publication. What I discovered was much worse than I expected: the tweets in the Spanish language range from anti -Muslims to explicit intolerance, which all remained public and unlimited.

Since then, Gascón has deleted a Twitter/X account and issued a statement apologizing for her tweets.

In an interview with diverseHagi discusses the reverse reaction, accusing it of being a “studio plant”, and why do you think the academy should act.

What prompted you to investigate the history of the social media of Carla Sofia Gascon?

I was not very interesting at first, but I was naturally curious, especially when it comes to public figures and their policy. I saw a tweet in which I used the word “Islamic”, which I found intense. It was not a plot – I do this with many celebrities. I just looked at the term, and what I found was shocking.

There was speculation that you are part of a mutilation campaign – mainly, the “studio plant” digs dirt on behalf of a competitor. What do you say that?

Certainly no. I am not a studio factory. I am just a person. The idea that the studio will choose me, a person who does not even have tiktok, is honest. This was a complete coincidence.

I was open to knowing that he is a black Muslim. How did you do your reaction to what you discovered?

It is fair to say that it was raising. I could have seen, and there would be nothing, but it was just intuition. This does not mean that someone said something like this will have many racist tweets as I did or tweet hostile to Muslims as it did. When you have an experience as I do, you know the dog’s whistle, and for me, it was a very The clear dog whistle.

So, was it simple like searching in a major word, and just everything was … there?

Yes, I mean, at this stage, Wednesday evening for me. I do not remember the time specified, but I thought I would publish tweets the next morning because I didn’t think they would get an attraction, but I am required To them for traction.

It was simple like searching for one word, and from there, I followed additional major words – especially in the Spanish language because this is the language in which you tweet. I have searched for terms such as “Islam” that may raise relevant results. When I wrote in these words, these tweets were barely any participation, and perhaps a few hundred views in total, one or two likes at most.

There was zero traction, even when she initially tweeted them. This was not some viral controversy waiting for the appearance. She tweeted these things, and they were online, without challenge, from 2016 to 2023. There was no response or any vision. This was just how she was tweeting a show. Not some deep diving or coordinated voltage – everything was there.

I told you required Tweets to gain traction. Why?

Many reasons. First, these tweets were not hidden. I am dealing with us because we are talking about a candidate from one of the most satisfied films in the history of the academy. Her nomination was historically – the first passing woman was nominated for the best actress.

You thought that with this level of vision, someone is in her team, or in Netflix, or behind her campaign, has reviewed her tweets. However, they were still awake. It was not only a single comment – there were tweets about George Floyd and many other things. He referred to arrogance – either the belief that these things do not concern or assume that it will not disturb anyone.

When a person has a historical position that represents a movie based on the so -called progressive values a history of racist and fanatic tweets, it reveals the hypocrisy of everything. This is not about a meaningful representation – it is just marketing. This marketing collapses when the person in the middle is a racist fanatic.

Some may argue that digging old tweets is an example of “canceling culture” that is looking to “cancel” the next person.

I completely ignore these people intellectually at every level. These tweets were from 2016 to 2023, which I found based on the words I looked about. Who knows what is also? More tweets have appeared since then.

She had every opportunity to ensure that she was not online anymore. Hundreds of thousands of dollars go to the award campaign – this is not a random person stumbling in the spotlight. This was a calculated effort from a major studio. They should have deleted them if they didn’t want to find these tweets. I came across the person who searched. It could be anyone. However, with the search for one word, I found some of the most uncomfortable racist tweets.

How do you feel about GasCon’s responses since the tweets came out?

As for her response – her apology was not an apology. She did not address the marginalized group that she targeted. She did not recognize the damage she caused. Let me be clear: I believe in forgiveness. I don’t think people are not canceled. I think they can bear accountability and make things right. But her immediate reaction was not to do so. It was not humility. Instead, she said, “light oppression.” Which – well, may not use these words when responding to racist tweets.

This is not my fault. Anyone else will not be the mistake of these tweets either. This is on it. It is on the people who run this campaign. What is really crazy is that, yet, she has not explicitly apologized to the group she offended.

I can’t think about another group of marginalized that can be targeted in this way, on this range, without raising a serious conversation about whether the nomination should stand. The Academy must decide the type of message you want to send – because this level of racism should be unqualified.

So, do you think that an Oscar should be canceled?

definitely! Especially in the climate of today. In the same way they call her movie “Important” or any mysterious terms used. It is equally important to show that this is an example of what should not fly on the world stage. What message is you send? Will you distribute a movie about it as “important” and “historical” and then you have a star who says higher and racist things? This is not controversial; It is a blatant racism. You cannot get it in both directions. You cannot show “choice of acting” how progress of the institution and then you do not have consequences for the person who is the opposite.

What will you say directly to Gascon?

nothing. It is just another racist.
