During the meeting, the President of the Judges briefed the International Monetary Fund delegation on the ongoing efforts of Pakistan to enhance the judicial performance, while emphasizing the independence of the judiciary and its role in its protection. He has made it clear that the judiciary is not accustomed to guidance links with missions, but is still addressing concerns related to judicial reforms. CJP also noted major constitutional developments, such as the restructuring of the Judicial Committee in Pakistan (JCP) and reforms related to judicial appointments and accountability.
CJP Africa stressed the importance of merging the Judicial and Parliamentary Committee for a more transparent judicial selection process. He also stated that the Supreme Court is preparing for a meeting of the agenda of the National Judicial Policy Committee (NJPMC), to be held in the last week of February.
The meeting also focused on judicial accountability, especially mechanisms for addressing complaints against judges, as CJP emphasizes the need for a strong and fair accountability system to support judicial integrity.
The International Monetary Fund team recognized the role of the judiciary in preserving legal stability and praising the continuous reforms aimed at enhancing governance and accountability. The two sides expressed a joint commitment to enhancing judicial efficiency and supporting the rule of law as a basis for economic and social progress.
After the meeting, CJP Yahya Afridi told the media that the International Monetary Fund delegation had requested details about the implementation of the program and the protection of property rights. He stated that the Pakistani judicial authority has submitted its judicial reforms and the national judicial policy of the International Monetary Fund team and stressed the importance of protecting foreign investment. CJP Afridi also reiterated that the independence of the judges should be preserved and that detailed disclosure was not their responsibility, according to the constitutional right.
