Janet Yang, President of the Academy of Arts and Sciences, said that the media and entertainment community needs to maintain “human authorship” with AI’s development in Hollywood, on Monday during a session at the NAB exhibition. “We need a person behind artificial intelligence,” she said. “I feel optimistic because we will find a way for what will be a large part of our lives.”
In the attendance at the National Association of Las Vegas for the first time, Yang participated in a committee during which she presented a general overview of the academy and ideas on artificial intelligence of the heavy engineering audience.
She pointed out that the academy has 19 branches, represents those in front of the camera and its successor, in addition to one of the latest branches, which aims at those who work in production technology, “also one can imagine that there are many different views (on artificial intelligence). There is one thing we feel strongly is to compose human creator.
Annie Zhang, head of the Academy Science and Technology Council, agreed, adding, “These are tools (but) people should be in its position.” The delegates stated that “the heart of what we do is telling stories” and “I think the machines will remind us is if it was a feeling.”
She noted that the part of their goal is to education. “It is not a secret society. It will always be improved,” she said.
Yang suggests that the field of science and technology “needs to get more attention … It is really important to find commonalities in the language (with all members). We all serve the same purpose – to make wonderful movies.”
Yang also took a moment to think about the Academy Awards last month. She said, “There were a lot of great moments at this year’s party.” With a reference to winning “Flow”, she said, “For a movie from Latvia to win the best animated movie that was incredible,” “Brazil became crazy when she won the award for the best international feature.”
She also cited the big winner at night, “Anura” from Sean Baker, adding, “What we do is on a group of love from one side and money on the other hand … Now it must be related to love … This is what great films lead.”
Also on Monday, the Academy leads the expected academy color coding system (AESS) 2.0, a new version of the open source color management system.
