A mother of seven children ended her life by taking poisonous pills with her two daughters due to a domestic dispute in Silwan locality, Kondian state, on Saturday.
A feeling of shock and mourning spread through the neighborhood after the incident.
According to details obtained by The Express Tribune, Muhammad Tahir Qureshi, son of Allah Din, a resident of Silwan locality, and his wife were in a dispute over marriage proposals for their daughters. It was alleged that the husband pressured his daughters to accept marriage proposals according to his desire, while the wife and her daughters did not agree to the proposals.
As a result of the dispute, Taher’s wife and daughters, Anza, 12, and Asmaa, 11, swallowed a toxic substance.
The mother and her two daughters were taken to a rural health centre, where the doctor referred them to Mianwali DHQ Hospital after receiving immediate medical assistance. However, the three victims were unable to survive.
As soon as the accident was reported, Kondian Police and Rescue 1122 teams arrived at the scene. After an autopsy and completion of legal procedures, the bodies were handed over to the heirs.
Cases in which several members of the same family committed suicide or were killed by their families were also reported earlier in the province.
On Monday, a woman reportedly poisoned herself and four other members of her family over financial problems in Okara.
A poor worker in Okara, Nizar Muhammad, who failed to repay the loan, was struggling to make ends meet, resulting in his family often quarreling over financial issues.
Nizar’s son, 20-year-old Waqas Ahmed, married 19-year-old Nahid two months ago. The couple lived in Gospora neighborhood of Basirpur town, Okara with Nazar, his 45-year-old wife and sons 18-year-old Ashfaq Ahmed and 16-year-old Sattar Ahmed.
The family reportedly had a debt of Rs 150,000. The whole family was worried about paying debts, and there were often quarrels at home.
Nahid’s in-laws often pressured her to get money from her father to settle the debts.
Nahid was reportedly fed up with the daily quarrels and allegedly fed her in-laws food containing poison, which led to the death of her husband Waqas and her brother-in-law Ashfaq, while her other 16-year-old brother-in-law died. Sattar Ahmed and his mother-in-law were deeply affected.
In March last year, a man shot and killed his wife and three children over a domestic dispute, before committing suicide in the Rai Chand area of Chiniot.
In April 2019, a man committed suicide after killing his father and sisters over a family dispute over his ex-wife, whom he wanted to marry again, in Shafiqabad, Lahore.
